What people are saying about breastfeeding project

“In August, a relative sent me a link to a news segment about Julia’s Way. Tears slid down my face as the prospect of giving the gift of my milk to my baby slowly returned to me. I explored the information on your website and realized that no one could tell me what my baby and I could or couldn’t do. How unfair was it for me to expect him to fail at this—or anything—before he was even born.” Sandra, expectant mother

"A big round of applause to these parents and others who met these challenges and more!" La Leche League USA

"Gorgeous and amazing! Smashing boundaries once again!"

Julia's Way is dedicated to reimagining life with Down syndrome. Our first project, a video entitled Why Be Normal, provides much-needed hope and inspiration for parents whose babies have recently been diagnosed with Down syndrome. We've had over 25,000 views since it was released in March 2017, and we continue to receive positive feedback.

Our biggest project yet is currently in production. Breastfeeding & Down Syndrome: a Comprehensive Guide for Mothers and Medical Professionals, will be the first book on this subject and is based on sound medical research. This book is written by a medical experts and will cover everything from how to prepare prenatally to how to breastfeed a baby with a heart condition to getting baby to breast after being tube fed. We are confident that our book will be an inspiring and helpful resource for new and expectant mothers and will be a trusted reference for medical professionals who want to help their patients. Our book will be available as a FREE DOWNLOAD on our website. We will also offer this book free of charge to lactation professionals working with the most vulnerable newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units. We expect to release this book in 2019.

We will soon begin sending new and expectant mothers of babies with DS breastfeeding support kits who want to breastfeed their babies. These kits will reassure mothers that they are being personally supported and encouraged, which is critically important during those challenging first days, weeks, and months after a new baby arrives. These kits will contain our book, information for the baby’s medical team, and other thoughtfully selected items for the new mother and her baby.

We have two additional exciting project on the horizon. In the first, Julia’s Way will create a certification program for lactation consultants and other medical professionals who wish to gain expertise in supporting mothers who plan to breastfeed their babies with Down syndrome. In the second, we will develop a peer network of mothers who have breastfed their babies with Down syndrome and who have a passion for this work. These women will learn basic breastfeeding strategies, share breastfeeding information, and provide one-on-one support to mothers in their area. Professional help is essential, but having positive interaction with someone who has “been there, done that” is invaluable.

We are so excited about the book, due out in 2019, and other upcoming projects aimed at helping mothers feel supported and at connecting them with the support they need. Won’t you help Julia’s Way meet our goals by lending your support today?
